Have Wine Prices Fallen in USA Restaurants?

Of course they have, but not as much as you might think, due to a combination of unusual market conditions.

New Master Sommeliers

We profile two Americans who passed the Master Sommelier diploma examination in February, and ask them about favorite wines and food pairings; their restaurants’ wine programs; and the exam itself.

Wine Promotions Ramp Up During Difficult Economic Times

One of the leading upscale restaurants in this city introduced several promotions in order to keep customers drinking wine and returning to it. Here are four of them—and one involves Facebook marketing.

Wine Flights Excel at this Wine Lounge

Wine accounts for 75% of total sales at this wine bar and restaurant—and half of its wine sales derive from ‘wine flights’, which have nearly doubled in sales as the economy has stalled. What is it about this operations’ ‘flight merchandising’ that is so effective?

Wine Recommendations

The “best of the best”—341 top wines are recommended, out of more than 1,000 tasted. Dozens of California Chardonnays are featured, especially from the 2008 vintage. We also offer a range of top Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Gris, Rieslings, and Viogniers. In reds, we suggest Cabernet Sauvignons (and blends) from recent vintages, especially 2007, an excellent vintage in California, and recent discoveries in Pinot Noir. We round out USA reds with a number of Zinfandels, Syrahs, and off-mainstream red varietals, such as Carignan and Charbono.

The wines from Argentina continue to gain momentum in the USA—sales for the first half of 2010 were up nearly 20% over 2009, itself a year of strong growth. We recommend here more than 50 of them, both white and red, with a focus upon Malbec, but also uncover some wonderful Merlots, Cabernets, blends, and Torrontes. In this issue, we also find many gems from France (Alsace, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Rhone, and Languedoc); several excellent German Rieslings; fine Italian reds; and stunning whites and reds from New Zealand.
